How Do Business Coaches Get Certified?

by | Feb 11, 2026 | Coaching

Does it matter how Business Coaches and Executive Coaces are certified? How do I know if my Business Coach has reputalbe training and certification?

“Are you certified?”

If you’ve ever asked a coach that good. It means you’re doing your homework.

But here’s a better question:

“How were you certified?”  and “Why should I work with you?”

Because not all certifications are created equal, and in coaching, that makes all the difference.

How Business Coaches Actually Get Certified

Sincebusiness coaching is not a regulated industry (yet), there are a few ways coaches can get certified:

1. Through a Structured, Reputable Program

These programs offer:

  • Live instruction (not just videos)
  • Practice-based training
  • Peer and mentor feedback
  • Coaching methodology and tools
  • Ethical guidelines
  • Ongoing education

Programs like this are built to help coaches succeed and help clients get real results.  The next question here is “Where is the follow up and Accountability from the Certification partner?  How closely do they stay in touch with the Coaches that use their branding certification in their practice?

2. Through a Fast, Online Certificate Course

These are typically:

  • Self-paced
  • Low-cost
  • Minimal or no assessment
  • Marketed heavily with little substance

They may give a “certificate,” but there’s often no methodology, no real practice, and no oversight.  These coaching platforms are usually subscription-based and the coach pays a monthly fee to use the coaching tools.

3. No Certification At All

Some people call themselves a coach based solely on business experience or personal success.

While experience is valuable, coaching is a discipline. Without training, there’s no structure, no accountability, and no professional standards.

What Makes a Coaching Program Credible?

If you’re evaluating a coach (or thinking of becoming one), here’s what to look for in a real certification program:

✅ Signs of a Structured, Reputable Program
Live or guided instruction
Curriculum grounded in coaching science or business systems
Practice with real feedback
Use of coaching tools and assessments
Ethics and accountability
Mentorship or community
Proven client frameworks and case studies

Anything less? It might be a certificate — but it’s not a certification.

What About FocalPoint Coaching Certification?

FocalPoint is an example of a business coaching certification that prioritizes structure and proven results. Coaches in the program go through:

  • A multi-phase certification process
  • Immersive, real-world business training
  • Access to proprietary coaching tools and systems
  • Ongoing mentorship and peer support
  • A framework tied to the teachings of Brian Tracy, used worldwide
  • Monthly Metrics Reporting to ensure the coach is delivering results and following through on the commitment and using the tools effectively

It’s not for everyone — because it’s built for coaches who want to deliver real outcomes.

Why Does This Matter to Clients?

Because when you’re hiring a coach to guide your business, your team, or your leadership, you want more than a conversation. You want:

  • A process
  • Accountability
  • Measurable growth
  • A partner who knows how to get you from point A to point B

That kind of coaching doesn’t come from a weekend course. It comes from structured certification.

If you’re considering working with a coach, or becoming one yourself, ask this:

“What was the structure and credibility of your certification process?”

If they can clearly explain it, that’s great. If not, keep looking.
